# How do I back up and restore a site on Faaaster?

The site's **Backups** tab lists your backups and lets you create one on demand with **New Backup**, or bring one back with **Restore**. Daily backups are included in every plan.

## Creating a backup

1. Open the site, **Backups** tab.
2. Click **New Backup**.

This is the step to take **before any risky operation**: plugin update, code change, database import.

## Restoring

1. Open the site, **Backups** tab.
2. Find the backup you want in the list.
3. Click **Restore**.

> **Restoring replaces the site's current state.** Everything done since the chosen backup is lost.

## Good to know

- **Daily backups** are included in every plan, Dev included.
- **Archiving a site deletes all of its backups**: export whatever you want to keep beforehand.
- With the **Viewer** role, you can view the tab but its buttons are grayed out.

## Restoring only part of the site

The restore window offers a **Perimeter**:

- **Files and database** — the full restore;
- **Database only** — to undo a content change without touching the code;
- **Files only** — to roll back a plugin or theme without losing the content published since.

## The safety net before restoring

The window checks **"Back up the current state before restoring (recommended)"** by default, which lets you undo the restore if the result isn't what you wanted.

> **Leave this box checked.** It's what makes the restore reversible. If the preliminary backup fails, the interface tells you and lets you choose to restore without a safety net rather than doing it behind your back.

## How many backups are kept?

**All of those from the last 30 days.** Beyond that, the restore points become sparser: one backup per week over the previous 12 weeks, one per month over the 9 months before that, one for the previous year, plus the site's very first backup.

> The cleanup only happens **after** a fresh backup is ready: the site is never left without a valid set of backups.

> ⚠️ **Your manual backups follow the same rule.** They are all kept for 30 days; after that, only one backup is kept per week then per month, whether it is manual or daily.
>
> To keep a specific state, **export it and download the files**: they stay on Faaaster for 7 days, but your own copy never expires.

## When are daily backups taken?

**At night**, between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Paris time. Each site gets its own slot within this window, spread out so that everything doesn't start at the same minute.
