How do I edit a domain's DNS on Faaaster?

The DNS zone of a domain managed at Faaaster is edited from its DNS section. There you can add, edit and delete records.

Supported record types

Faaaster supports an extensive list:

A, AAAA, ALIAS, CAA, CDS, CNAME, DNAME, DS, KEY, LOC, MX, NS, OPENPGPKEY, PTR, SPF, SRV, SSHFP, TLSA, TXT, WKS.

In practice, a few of them are enough in most cases:

  • A and CNAME — point the domain or a subdomain to a site;
  • MX — receive emails;
  • TXT — ownership verifications, SPF, DKIM and DMARC.

⚠️ A mistake in the DNS zone can make your site or your emails unreachable. Write down the original value before changing it, and keep in mind that a change takes some time to propagate.

Adding or editing a record

  1. Open the domain, DNS section.
  2. Click New DNS record.
  3. Fill in the Name, the TTL, the Type, then one or more values — the Add a value button lets you stack several on the same record.
  4. Click Submit.

These buttons are grayed out for the Viewer role, which can view the zone without being able to edit it.

The DNS record form: name, TTL, type and values.

The TTL

The TTL (Time To Live) is the length of time, in seconds, during which DNS servers around the world keep your record in memory. It is editable, between 300 seconds (5 minutes) and 2,592,000 seconds (30 days). The default value is 300.

Lower the TTL before a migration, not during it. A record at 10,800 seconds takes up to three hours to propagate. Set it to 300 a few hours before changing its value: the switchover will then be almost immediate, and you can raise it again afterwards.

The safety net: snapshots

The DNS section offers Create snapshot and Restore snapshot. A snapshot freezes the complete state of your zone, and restoring brings it back to that state.

The DNS section: create a snapshot (1) and add a record (2).

⚠️ Snapshots are not automatic. A manual change goes straight to the registrar, with no prior snapshot. So get into the habit of clicking Create snapshot before touching your zone — it takes two seconds, and it's what makes a mistake reversible.

One exception: when the AI assistant changes your DNS, a snapshot is taken automatically before the write, and before any restore.

If your records don't appear

The interface then displays: "DNS records are not available because this domain uses external (non-Gandi) nameservers. To manage DNS records, please use your DNS provider's interface."

This is normal for a domain bought elsewhere, or whose nameservers have been delegated to Cloudflare or another provider: management happens on their side. Faaaster cannot write to a zone it doesn't host.

Where to read the list

The DNS section displays your records in pages of 15, sortable by Name, Type, TTL or Value, with the total count at the top ("19 records").
